- DIED. William Shea, 84, politically savvy New York City
- attorney who helped bring National League baseball back to the
- city in 1962 and was honored by having the Mets' stadium named
- for him; in New York City. When the New York Giants and the
- Brooklyn Dodgers departed for California in 1957, Shea called
- it the "most flagrant violation of loyalty to one's fans I've
- ever seen." Mayor Robert Wagner appointed Shea head of a
- committee to lure a National League franchise to New York. By
- helping to create the Continental League, Shea frightened the
- barons of major-league baseball into agreeing to expand the
- National League to include a New York team in 1962, which was
- christened the Mets.
